Monkey Madness: The Process

When first asked to create a game, I was very nervous. I became increasingly more nervous when I was clicking on the recommended websites to carry out this task… and I saw coding. I immediately threw my laptop down for a few minutes because I knew this would take more time than originally planned. I became fully prepared to spend hours on YouTube figuring out how to properly code, and I was not too happy with this.

I decided to see what my classmates had done for the project in order to help guide me. I checked Slack and looked at the first post I saw. This post used Scratch, and it looked pretty simple! I went to Scratch myself and began my process.

First of all, Scratch offers tutorials in order to aid in the game making process… which saved me a few tears! The tab is at the top left of the page as soon as you click to create your own game.

There are a wide variety of different games that are possible with Scratch, even more than pictured above! The tutorial that caught my eye was the “Pong Game” tutorial.

I simultaneously watched the tutorial while experimenting with my game and this made the process so much easier! There were commands on the left side of the browser that are obviously ways to make the coding process easier for beginners, but all the while still showing the process and how to code in general.

After I followed the tutorial and customized my game, I was finished! I then chose to add a sound affect in the hopes of it working, and to my surprise, I was able to do it without a tutorial. This showed me how I was able to learn in such a short amount of time. I chose to use the “Bite” sound affect every 1.5 seconds, as this made it match up with the bananas hitting the paddle the most appropriately. Lastly, I added a monkey in the middle of the screen at the last moment.

I really enjoyed the green flag and red stop sign at the top because this allowed you to preview your changes to make sure they can be carried out in the means you were hoping for. Overall, this was super fun and very informational! I’m not gonna lie… I’m also super excited this website made coding the easiest it could… or else I would’ve not had as much fun with the process.

After I was satisfied with the game, I posted it to my account and now it is free to play! Here is a look at the final product!
